Coal got more efficient. Coal use exploded.
Engines got more efficient. Vehicle-miles climbed.
Lighting got cheaper. Ambient lumens grew by orders of magnitude.
Compute-per-watt has improved roughly four to five orders of magnitude over forty years.
Total compute consumption has grown faster.
Hyperscale data-center electricity demand is projected to roughly double by 2030 — driven primarily by AI training and inference.
Cooling is currently the binding siting constraint on data-center expansion. Water-stressed regions can't host hyperscale. Thermal density caps how much compute fits per square meter. Utility-scale grid commitments are required up front.
Remove cooling as a constraint and the binding question becomes: who gets to scale, and toward what?
A working zero-heat, zero-water cooling architecture is not, by itself, a solution to the data-center problem. It is a removal of the constraint that has been quietly limiting it. Total energy consumption goes up, not down. AI training scales further. Surveillance infrastructure scales further. The manipulation economy scales further.
Patent-licensing economics for a working zero-thermal cooling technology in 2026 are dominated by hyperscalers. Without an enforceable doctrine of use, the path of least resistance routes the breakthrough straight into the infrastructure that needed it least.
That is the weapon hidden inside the gift.
